Visualization of man-hours for each department in the process

Background
Toyota Motor East Japan develops and produces Toyota vehicles, mainly compact cars, and is the core development and production base of the Toyota Group. Automobile manufacturing involves many processes, including assembly and painting, and thousands of forms have traditionally been used to manage compliance with standards for each part and process. Since many of these forms were being filled out by hand on paper, the workload was heavy and efficiency improvements were required.

For example, to control coating quality, sensors are used to acquire color measurement data to ensure that there are no differences in coloration, and to measure a pass/fail result against reference values. Previously, the graphing and trend analysis of these results was a time-consuming manual process. To increase work efficiency, MotionBoard was introduced as a data visualization tool, replacing this paper-based handwritten operation.

Key features of the system include:
- Alert notifications of abnormalities if standard values are exceeded
- Excellent visualization features, such as dynamic graph representation when there are chart axis scale changes
- Ease of operation by workers on the manufacturing floor

Effects of introduction
Toyota Motor East Japan introduced MotionBoard in 2016, and through integration with i-Reporter (CIMTOPS), the company digitized management forms for manufacturing processes to visualize data and improve productivity. When MotionBoard Cloud was introduced, there were only five users, but when it was rolled out to the entire company, it was migrated to the on-premises version of MotionBoard. As of February 2024, about 700 people are using it. Toyota Motor East Japan is eager to make improvements, such as holding regular educational sessions and creating tutorial videos on how to use MotionBoard, and MotionBoard is becoming more widely used within the company.

i-Reporter's tablet input and Bluetooth integration with measuring instruments have also greatly streamlined the input process, and the integration with MotionBoard has automated the drawing of graphs and the display of alerts for abnormal data trends. In addition, reliable colorimetric control allows employees to detect signs of defects and adjust equipment, thereby preventing product variation and improving coating quality.

After company-wide deployment, MotionBoard is being used for production planning and performance management, linking data between core systems and production facilities. Information that used to be posted on paper is now projected on large monitors located onsite.

Managers are now able to immediately check data and understand real-time production information, leading to higher utilization rates and improved productivity.

In addition to use at manufacturing sites, the system is also used to reduce Excel-based management tasks, improve operational efficiency, and go paperless, for example by linking attendance record system data with MotionBoard to visualize overtime and annual leave utilization rates, as well as the number of sheets printed by printers.
