CO2 emissions visualization platform, EcoNiPass, now offers a CFP calculation option to calculate CO2 emissions per product and manufacturing facility

WingArc1st Inc.

WingArc1st Inc. and Suzuyo Shoji Co., Ltd. have developed a CFP calculation option for EcoNiPass, a CO2 emissions visualization platform that aggregates and visualizes CO2 emissions in the supply chain to help with achieving carbon neutrality. This option enables the calculation of CO2 emissions for each product and manufacturing facility and will be available on 3 July.

EcoNiPass is a cloud service that allows companies and their suppliers to input their energy usage and aggregate and visualize CO2 emissions. The service is provided to support the understanding of CO2 emissions in the supply chain and to promote reduction measures.

The CFP calculation option was developed as an optional feature of EcoNiPass to enable visualization of CO2 emissions per product or manufacturing facility and to support efforts to reduce an organization's carbon footprint (CFP) (*1).

Background
With the acceleration of initiatives to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, companies are required to calculate and disclose CO2 emissions throughout their supply chains (*2). As a result, there is a growing movement to require the calculation and disclosure of CFP, which is an evaluation index of the amount of CO2 emissions per product or service. Initiatives focusing on CFP have been launched internationally (*3), and the calculation, disclosure and reduction of CFP are also urgent issues for domestic industry, in order to maintain its international competitiveness. In addition, since CFP needs to be calculated by all companies in the supply chain and aggregated for reporting purposes, it is expected to represent a significant workload across the entire supply chain. Suzuyo and WingArc have therefore decided to start offering an optional function of EcoNiPass that reduces the workload involved in CFP calculation.

(*1) CFP is converted into the equivalent amount of CO2 emissions at each stage of the product life cycle: raw material procurement, production, distribution, sales, transportation, and disposal/recycling. Refer to ISO14067 (2018) for detail.
ISO 14067 (2018) defines GHG emissions minus removals and sinks in the relevant product system, converted to equivalent CO2 production, based on a life cycle assessment (LCA) of climate change impacts.

(*2) Reference Chapter 1-1 at page 3 of the Carbon Footprint Report of the Study Group on Calculation and Verification of Carbon Footprint toward Carbon Neutrality in the Entire Supply Chain (March 2023)

(*3) Companies working on CFP refer to either ISO14067:2018 or the GHG Protocol Product standard, and many companies in Japan refer to ISO14067:2018. One of the complementary calculation rules that has been recently introduced is the PathFinder Framework developed by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). This states that, in principle, primary data should be preferred, but secondary data can be used if primary data is not available.
In addition, the company should request primary data from suppliers one step upstream from itself, and aim to accumulate as much accurate primary data as possible by tracing back the supply chain one step at a time.

(*4) If a supplier is using EcoNiPass, an additional contract for the new optional function is required.
